Long Distance Friendships

February 8th, 2010 by admin

smileWe travel. A lot. Some of our favorite people on the planet don’t live in our town. Our city. Our state. But we still celebrate them and the times we get to have together.

How do you maintain long distance friendships? While Facebook and Twitter provide quick updates, there’s still nothing quite like picking up the phone to hear someone’s voice. Some like Skype. I do not. Probably because I live in my pajamas (never a good look on the laptop). The annual Christmas letter is a must (yes, I know it’s old-fashioned!). And of course, prayer. Praying for others has a way of connecting us to others through the ups and downs of life.

How do you keep up your long distance friendships?
When do you know it’s time to let one go?

Blogging Your Way Through The Sacred Echo

February 7th, 2010 by admin

colored-pencilsWhile some choose to read The Sacred Echo in one sitting or over various months, one woman chose to blog her way through The Sacred Echo. You can check out her insights at www.jeanmatthewhall.blogspot.com. I love this idea because it gives her and others the opportunity to watch progress and record what she has learned from and about God over the time she spent reading. This may be something you could consider the next time you begin a book.

Giveaway: The Prayers of Jesus Workbook and DVD

February 7th, 2010 by admin

prayers-of-jesusAs many of you may remember, earlier last year, I had the opportunity to travel to Israel to film three DVD studies. Those three are all released and available in the www.margaretfeinberg.com store with sample video clips for you to enjoy.

The Forgiveness of Jesus deals with the guilt and shame that we all frequently carry. Yet, Jesus came to take away our shame, to forgive us, allowing us to move from guilt and shame to freedom and forgiveness.

The Life of Jesus explores the major events of Jesus’ life and ministry. It is only when we drink deeply from the life of Christ that we can be rescued from our failures and experience greater vitality in daily life.

The Last Days of Jesus encounters the impact of Jesus’ death. Also, the effect of the life and death of Jesus’ understanding the main events of his death, so we can find a full life.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on these studies and seeing the sights of Israel. Featured on the DVD are many big names of modern Christian thinkers, including: Dr. Darrell Bock, Dr. Gary Burge, Dr. Scott Duvall, Prof. Susan Hecht, Dr. Mark Strauss, and Dr. Matt Williams.

Deeper Connections made an earlier set of DVD studies called The Prayers of Jesus, The Parables of Jesus, and The Miracles of Jesus.

This week, we are giving away a copy of The Prayers of Jesus DVD and the Prayers of Jesus Workbook. In order to enter the competition, simply post a comment on this blog post at www.margaretfeinberg.com. Good luck!

The Best Kind of Mentoring

February 6th, 2010 by admin

box-peopleI’m often asked about the importance of mentoring, and I think it’s something that our generation craves. We long for older, wiser people to come into our lives and walk alongside of us. We want them to love us, pray for us, challenge us, and root for us.

Yet a good mentor is hard to find. Part of the challenge is that our expectations are out of line. We may look to a mentor to be a kind of expert, sage, or counselor beyond their expertise, ability, or comfort level.

A good mentor is simply someone who will walk beside you who has a little bit more dust on them. They may have been down the same road or a different one, but they know you’re better off not taking it alone. They know when to speak, when to listen, and when to silently pray. Being a good mentor (or mentoree) isn’t easy. There’s always some stumbling and fumbling involved, but knowing that someone is for you and with goes a long way to smooth things over.

In our increasingly fragmented society, I don’t think a single mentor will do. We need several. People who can offer their expertise and wisdom and prayers in different areas of our lives-our relationships, our work, our spiritual growth.

One person I consider a mentor I turn to when it comes to publishing. Another when it comes to issues of being a woman in leadership. Another when it comes to studying the Bible in depth. Another when it comes to navigating life in general. These relationships have developed naturally though intentionally and I’m grateful for every one.

The best kind of mentoring and growth comes when we’re intentional about our relationships and recognize the importance of intergenerational friendships-with those who mentor us and those we mentor.

What have you found works for you when it comes to mentoring and being mentored?

Pepsi’s Innovative Business Approach

February 6th, 2010 by admin

pepsi-grants-xtras_03Like many, tomorrow I choose watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, not really the game. As some of you may know already, instead of spending the $2-3 million on a Super Bowl commercial tomorrow, Pepsi has opted for a different approach. They have launched their Pepsi Refresh Project. This innovative idea offers people the chance to submit their favorite idea, solution, or non-profit that they believe will have a positive impact on their community. Up until March 1, 2010, anyone has the opportunity to vote on ten of their favorite ideas each day for this month’s 1000 submissions. Pepsi is awarding a total of $2 million to various non-profits, businesses, and everyday people to help them launch their ideas for a better tomorrow. Some of the categories listed include: Health, Arts and Culture, The Planet,  Neighborhoods, and Education.

Log in and vote for your favorite ten today. If you have an idea, submit it here.

Get Ready To Get Your Olympics On!

February 3rd, 2010 by admin

chadhedrickThe Winter Olympics are coming, and I thought you might like to hear a powerful testimony and have one more person to root for during the games. Chad Hedrick, an Olympic Speed Skater, is member of one of our favorite churches and he’s heading to the Olympics this month for the second time. What’s different than four years ago? Well, over the course of the last year or so he’s become a follower of Jesus.

The team at Capital Church in Salt Lake City, Utah put this video together in less than 24 hours,so filming conditions were less than ideal and video edits weren’t perfect.  However, the final product is a powerful reminder of what God can do in all of our lives. It is about 14 minutes long, which in our ADD world, is a longer than many videos these days. But keep watching until the end. And for a chuckle, watch past the end to the outtake. Visit www.capitalchurch.com/blogs/troy to view the video.

Welcome to Tuesdays With Tozer

February 2nd, 2010 by admin

tozer2As you discovered last week, we’re going to be celebrating Tuesdays With Tozer this spring. Tozer has a knack for stirring up the hunger to know God in my own heart and I hope he’ll do the same for you.

“One of the most liberating declarations in the New Testament is this: ‘The true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth’ (John 4:23, 24). Here the nature of worship is shown to be wholly spiritual. True religion is removed from diet and days, from garments and ceremonies, and placed where it belongs - in the union of the spirit of man with the Spirit of God.” -A.W. Tozer, Man: The Dwelling Place of God

As I reflect on these words I’m reminded just how hard it is to worship God in spirit. Worshipping God requires focus, energy, commitment, and discipline. It moves us into a place of humility and dependence where we are invited to embrace the goodness of God, His grace, His mercy, His love and in the process we love in spite of ourselves and find ourselves enthralled with Him. Lord, Help me to worship you in spirit and truth. Amen.

What Not to Feed Fido (or Hershey)

February 1st, 2010 by admin

doggySo we all know the age old “never give your dog chocolate,” but really, what else can’t a dog eat? All dog-owners know that dogs are the perfect vacuum cleaner for under the kitchen table– sucking up any human food possible, but there are foods that are dangerous and deadly to man’s best friend.

One of the most dangerous foods for dogs are grapes. Even in the form of a raisin, grapes will damage a dog (or cat’s) kidneys.

Lately, with all this Twilight/New Moon fuss, you may be tempted to feed your dog garlic to scare away any Edward Cullen vampire’s in the neighborhood, but that’s a no-no. Garlic and onions damage a dog’s red blood cells.

After feeding a dog garlic or onions, you may feel the urge to share a piece of gum with little Scruffy. Unfortunately, studies have shown that the xylitol found in sugar-free gum causes low blood sugar in our favorite mutts.

Although many of us wonder what Buddy would be like buzzed, it is never okay to give alcohol to dogs.

Other foods on the no-no list include, raw yeast, bread dough, macadamia nuts, and avocados.

Giveaway: Notetaker’s Interactive Bible

January 31st, 2010 by admin

bible2If you are like me, you’re Bible is probably covered in writing. In between lines. On every margin. Above and even on the maps. Earlier this year, I had to get my Bible rebound because I didn’t want to miss out on all the jots and comments I have recorded from over the years.

One Bible-maker took this into mind and created an interactive Bible– chock full of space for notetakers like me!

In order to win a copy of this interactive notetaker’s Bible, simply leave a comment on this blog post at www.margaretfeinberg.com. The winner will be announced this Friday!
