Deeply Theological Whimsical Wednesdays

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 by Margaret

Each Wednesday this summer, I’ve asked a Deeply Theological Whimsical Question. Something for you to play with, bat around, and explore. Since this is the final week, we’re going to select winners from posts at www.margaretfeinberg.com for each question and post a “Best Of the Deeply Theological Whimsical.”

Here are the ground rules:
-You are invited to open the Bible and think about each question.
-You are invited to be fun, thoughtful, snarky and highly creative.
-You are invited to respond with multiple answers.
-You are invited to be clever and creative.
-You are invited to respond with non-Sunday school responses.
-You are invited to treat others as you would like to be treated – no nasty grams folks.

Here is the Question:
You have the opportunity to give someone a piece of your mind! But you have to use the Bible to do it. Jesus calls the Pharisees “a brood of vipers” (Matthew 22:33) and some youths called Elisha “bald head” (2 Kings 2:23). What Biblical “phrase(s)” would you use to let someone have it?

Let the fun begin!

Need A Little Help From My Friends: Your Fave Tunes

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 by Margaret

coldplay I’m working on a soundtrack to the very first book I ever wrote, God Whispers: Learning to Hear His Voice. Those of you who have read The Organic God, The Sacred Echo, and/or Scouting the Divine know that they all come with a soundtrack in the back–a list of songs that complement the writing.

I’d love your song suggestions! I’m looking for songs that from a variety of artists–mainstream, upstream, downstream–that speak about, hint, ask hard questions et. for the following themes:

Hunger/Hungering for God, Hearing God’s Voice, Words, Language, Waiting, Patience, Silence, Loss, Love, Beauty

Any suggestions?

At the beginning of the summer introduced Deeply Theological Whimsical Wednesdays. Now you’re probably thinking, um, Margaret, those words don’t go together. You’re right. But they should.

And G.K. Chesteron is a reminder that it’s not impossible.

The McDreamy’a—If you could play matchmaker for any woman and man in the Bible, who would you pair and why? What one woman and man in the Bible should avoid trying to date at all cost?

To the amusement and joy of junior high leaders everywhere there are at least two streakers in the Bible (see Genesis 39 and Matthew 14). What is your favorite unexpected story in the Bible?

Thanks to Everyone who Supported the Rubber Ducky Race

Monday, August 2nd, 2010 by Margaret

rubber-ducksThis Saturday the ducks launched into the river here in Durango! The camp where we’ve been volunteering, Cross Bar X Youth Ranch, was selected as the partner with Kiwanis for the annual Rubber Ducky Race.

Thanks to your support, the camp was able to sell more than 500 tickets in less than two weeks making this one of the biggest and best Rubber Ducky Races ever in Durango!

The camp sold the winning ducky–which included a $1000 prize–to the the camp’s program director’s grandmother (who lives on a fixed income and only bought a single ticket–the prize blessed her socks off!) While none of the tickets tickets Leif and I sold won prizes, two of the tickets we sold placed 16 and 17th–right after the prizes awarded ended. We are grateful for all of you–youth pastors, small groups, friends, and family around the country–who enabled us to sell nearly three times the amount of tickets we were responsible for and raise more than $1500 for the camp! You are awesome and we’re thankful!

June, the camp director at Cross Bar X Youth Ranch, where we’re volunteering all summer, found an announcement in the paper. Kiwanas was looking for one non-profit in the area to partner with for their annual Rubber Ducky Race. On July 31, they release 1000 plastic ducks down the river here in Durango, Colorado, and the first ducky to the finish line (they’re numbered) wins $1000.

We knew it was a long shot, but I wrote a letter to Kiwanas and asked that h be considered for their partner. Guess what? We won! We were chosen among several dozen entries. But now we have less than a week left to sell spots in the ducky race and raise funds for the low-income youth who attend Cross Bar X Youth Ranch.

While in the United States is nearing $1000, kids can come to Cross Bar X Youth Ranch for as low as $40 and have the time of their lives. We see kids lives transformed in powerful ways as they’re loved, encouraged, and challenged during the week.

But now, with less than a week left, I need your help! I still need to sell 38 tickets to the Rubber Ducky Race. They’re only $10 each. Would you consider buying 3 or 5, or 10 tickets? If so, drop me an email at margaret at margaret feinberg dot com and I’ll let you know the details!

Together, we can make a huge difference in the lives of these kids! (Oh, yeah, and if your ducky comes in first, you bag $1000).

You’ve just won the Biblical lotto! In exchange for your winning ticket, you get to pick one object (now an artifact) from the Bible and keep it, sell it, give it to a museum, whatever you want. Which object do you pick? Why? What do you do with it?
