I HEART Origins

Saturday, June 19th, 2010 by admin

origins_logo-2This July, Origins is hosting its first ever event–July 23rd-24th. Some of the speakers include Amena Brown, Dave Gibbons, Henry Kaestner, JR Kerr, Scot McKnight, Dan Kimball, Charles Lee, Erwin McManus, and Mark Russell (more to come!).  I am taking some time off from camp to attend to Origins Event hosted in LA at Club Nokia (SUCH a fun venue), and couldn’t be more excited about it!

The way it is designed, this conference will not be just about speakers lecturing information, but rather an interaction between speakers, church leaders, and attendants. Just like the Origins Project, this network is not just for church leaders, but also church-goers.

Even before the conference begins, Origins is putting together service projects to do together as a body. On Friday the 23rd, we are serving the people in Los Angeles. We hope to focus on what it means to be on a mission for Jesus-creatively and actively.

It isn’t too late to register! Visit originsproject.ning.com to learn more and sign up for this great opportunity!

Do You Have a an Old Laptop Sitting Around? We Can Use It to Send an African Child to School

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 by admin

comeletsdancelogoIt’s no secret that we’re big fans of Come Let’s Dance. The organization, led by our friend Shana Gilbert, is committed to community development and restoration in Uganda. Over the past five years, they’ve helped young men and women graduate from secondary school, own their own taxis, and grow their own crops.

In fact, four more students just graduated from secondary school and Come Let’s Dance wants to send them to university. Do you, or someone you know, have an OLD LAPTOP? They can re-furbish anything (yep, anything!) and sell them for school fees. Come Let’s Dance currently has two students in university full-time who are funded entirely with old laptops. We were thrilled to be able to join in and donate an old laptop last fall.

Will you join us in making a difference? If you have an old laptop you’re willing to donate, please post on this blog, and we’ll have someone from Come Let’s Dance contact you as to where to send it (in the United States, of course).

You can put the laptop in a flat rate priority mail box and send it to
Come Let’s Dance
PO BOX 770172
Steamboat, CO 80477

Feel free to include a request (with your contact information) for a donation receipt!

Tuesdays with Tozer

The Excess Milk Situation

Some years ago I wrote a book that is still being sold. My thesis in that book is that we must seek God and follow hard after Him. I told the publisher the title should be The Pursuit of God. Someone tried to get me to change the title. “People will not read a book about the pursuit of God,” he argued. But those were the very words that caught the imagination of the reading public.

The story of Jacob and the stories of other similar characters in the Bible have caused me to believe I could write a sequel entitled God’s Pursuit of Man. Before any person can begin seriously to pursue God, God must first pursue him or her. Before anyone can begin seriously to seek God, God must already have begun to seek him or her.

–A.W. Tozer (Men Who Met God, p. 51-52)

I couldn’t help but smile when I read Tozer’s words. He had a book idea about people pursuing God and was by the publisher told the book would never sell. I still enjoy rereading his work today.

The story reminds me of a book idea I had more than five years ago about people wanting to change the world and make the world a better place. A publisher told me that people didn’t really want to change the world or improve it. The book would never sell. But one publisher saw hope for the idea. They changed the title to, “Simple Acts of Faith” and paired the subtle, but simple reminders that small things really do make a difference with Norman Rockwell artwork. The book went on to sell more than 60,000 copies and still remains in print today.

Killer Tribes, Mavericks, & The Incredible Flying Car

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009 by Margaret

It’s a joy to seeflying-car people of faith on the frontlines of innovation. In the November issue of Popular Mechanics, Steve Saint is highlighted among “The Year’s Best Inventions” for building the first flying car! Sound like fiction? It’s not. Nearly ten years ago, Steve started I-TEC, an engineering ministry in Florida. He envisioned a vehicle that would allow the very same tribe that killed his father to get around the roadless world of rainforest and rivers they live in.

You may be familiar with this historic story. In 1956, Steve Saint’s father Nate, along with four other missionaries, Jim Elliot (husband of Elizabeth Elliott), Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, and Peter Fleming, made a historic journey to meet the Aucas or “naked savages” in the jungles of Ecuador. With an outrageous homicide rate  the tribe was famous for the habitual killing of anyone and everyone’especially their own people. After dropping gifts and supplies, the five young men felt they had established a strong rapport. Bathed in prayer, they flew into a remote site to meet the tribe.

Steve Saint was only five years old when he heard the news that his father and the other missionaries had been killed by the tribesmen. Five days later, a ground crew recovered the bodies, which had been pierced by spears. With gripping accounts in Reader’s Digest and Life, the news quickly spread through the press.

In an unforgettable story of love and perseverance, Nate Saint’s sister, Rachel Saint, and Elisabeth Elliot, widow of Jim Elliot, moved into the rainforest to live with the tribe. Eventually many of the tribesmen in the contact group converted to Christianity, including those who had killed the missionaries. Instead of hating or fearing the Aucas (who now call themselves the Waodani), Steve  Saint grew up loving the tribe and forming a lifelong relationship with them. He is still passionately committed to serving hard-to-reach tribes.

And he’s still making the headlines. Powered by a 128-hp engine, as noted by Popular Mechanics, the 1100-pound “Maverick” can travel 80 miles per hour on pavement and move over dirt tracks. When a trees, rocks, or the end of the road get in the way, the driver/pilot hoists a parachute up a mast and shifts the vehicle into flight mode. The power moves from the wheels to the propeller on top. These flying cars will soon be carrying medicine and supplies to remote areas throughout the Amazon. The flying cars are expected to be for sale within a year.  To check out the You Tube video, click HERE.
