Deeply Theological Whimsical Wednesdays

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 by Margaret

faces

Each Wednesday this summer, I’ve asked a Deeply Theological Whimsical Question. Something for you to play with, bat around, and explore. Since this is the final week, we’re going to select winners from posts at www.margaretfeinberg.com for each question and post a “Best Of the Deeply Theological Whimsical.”

Here are the ground rules:
-You are invited to open the Bible and think about each question.
-You are invited to be fun, thoughtful, snarky and highly creative.
-You are invited to respond with multiple answers.
-You are invited to be clever and creative.
-You are invited to respond with non-Sunday school responses.
-You are invited to treat others as you would like to be treated – no nasty grams folks.

Here is the Question:
You have the opportunity to give someone a piece of your mind! But you have to use the Bible to do it. Jesus calls the Pharisees “a brood of vipers” (Matthew 22:33) and some youths called Elisha “bald head” (2 Kings 2:23). What Biblical “phrase(s)” would you use to let someone have it?

Let the fun begin!

Deeply Theological Whimsical Wednesdays

At the beginning of the summer, I introduced Deeply Theological Whimsical Wednesdays. Now you’re probably thinking, um, Margaret, those words don’t go together. You’re right. But they should.

And G.K. Chesteron is a reminder that it’s not impossible.

I’ve always wondered who would win if Superman took on the Incredible Hulk. And I can’t help but ask: In a showdown between a Nephilim giant (Genesis 6:4) and Goliath (1 Samuel 17), who would win and why?

Here is the Question:

Russell Crowe, star of the Gladiator and Robin Hood, is going to make one bad boy Bible film. What Biblical story is his movie based on? What’s it called? Why?

Media Monday: Holy Yum–The Handmand Artisan Candy Bar

Monday, June 7th, 2010 by Margaret

bees-beansWhen I first went to Alaska to help my aunt with her bed and breakfast, I met Faith. She was the daughter in amazing family in Sitka who was a pastry chef. A gifted pastry chef. Whatever Faith cooked was holy yum.

Well, we just found out that Faith launched her own company, Bees & Beans, in Portland, Oregon, creating handmade artisan candy bars. You may be thinking, but a candy bar is not exactly qualify as a “Media Monday” feature. Maybe not, but this is a candy bar with it’s own luscious website. A website you wouldn’t know about if you didn’t come here :).

We were able to put in an order for first official batch! We received a half a dozen Honey Bars in the mail–honey caramel and filbert nougat dipped in dark chocolate. Melt in your mouth deliciousness. While they are amazing, I have to remind myself this was just her first batch, which means she’s going to keep getting better and better. If you’re looking for a special treat (6 two-ounce bars $30), check out Bees & Beans. And if you live in Portland, you can enjoy her delicacies at several locations.

What is the the Best Coffee Ever?

Monday, May 17th, 2010 by admin

starbucksCalling all coffee lovers, addicts, aficionados. What is YOUR favorite brand of coffee?

We travel a lot so we get to try different roasts and coffee shops around the country. My friend, Eric Bryant, introduced me to Lux in Phoenix, and I’ve never been the same. The lattes are velvety richness-oh yum! Meanwhile, Scot McKnight argues that Inteligencia from Chicago is the absolute best. We tried to swing by a shop the last time we were in town, but alas, they were on the other side of town. And our dear friends at Living Hope Church (thanks a lot John Bishop!) got me hooked on Stumptown to the point that I have it shipped to my house ever month or so.

All these coffees have one thing in common–they have a smooth chocolately taste to the bean (no harsh Starbucks burnt flavor!).

I Am Awesome! How About You?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 by Margaret

browniesI think we need to learn to celebrate our awesomeness! Those moments when we find ourselves being, well, awesome.

I just had one.

We had some new friends over this afternoon and I decided to bake brownies. But I didn’t taste a brownie before I served them (wheat allergies). Everyone ate them and seemed to enjoy…or so I thought.

In an effort to be kind, I packed up the remaining brownies, handed them to the four-year-old daughter and asked, “Do you want to take these with you?”

The most adorable little girl nodded yes!

I was awesome.

Until Leif looked at me with the what-are-you-doing-glance?

After our new friends drove away, Leif explained that the brownies tasted like bricks. Dry as the desert. Hard as a stone. Everyone was gracious, including the young boy who announced, “Look mom! They don’t even soften in milk!”

Somehow I missed that. And I sent rock hard brownies home with guests.

Yep. I’m awesome.

How about you?

Creative Activity for Scouting the Divine Study

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 by admin

muffinsThe Scouting the Divine DVD Kit is chock-full of fun activities to do as a group. Today, I developed a new creative activity to consider for the Session Four “In the Hive” which looks at honey in the Bible.

I recently learned about an eco-friendly, colorful, and fun way to make muffins. Use orange peels instead of muffin cups! Simply cut an orange in half, remove center, and use the rind to hold your favorite muffin recipe or mix! You’ll probably need to cook the muffin mix for an extra 4-8 minutes (based on the recipe) when using orange peel muffin cups.

Consider making a honey nut muffins or banana nut muffins and serve with honey to your group as a snack for Session Four. Check out the picture. I made these this morning. I advise not overfilling the orange peel–as I learned the hard way! Be sure to eat them the same day they are made as well!

If you have already purchased the study, we’d love for you to send in a picture of your group for us to post on the website if you get a chance.

When Exactly Does the Five Second Rule Apply?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 by Margaret

five-second-ruleJust found this handy dandy flow chart for knowing when you Drop Food on the Floor Do You Eat It? I figure it can help determine when the five second rule applies. Do you have any additions, exceptions,  or add-on rules to the five-second rule?

What Not to Feed Fido (or Hershey)

Monday, February 1st, 2010 by admin

doggySo we all know the age old “never give your dog chocolate,” but really, what else can’t a dog eat? All dog-owners know that dogs are the perfect vacuum cleaner for under the kitchen table– sucking up any human food possible, but there are foods that are dangerous and deadly to man’s best friend.

One of the most dangerous foods for dogs are grapes. Even in the form of a raisin, grapes will damage a dog (or cat’s) kidneys.

Lately, with all this Twilight/New Moon fuss, you may be tempted to feed your dog garlic to scare away any Edward Cullen vampire’s in the neighborhood, but that’s a no-no. Garlic and onions damage a dog’s red blood cells.

After feeding a dog garlic or onions, you may feel the urge to share a piece of gum with little Scruffy. Unfortunately, studies have shown that the xylitol found in sugar-free gum causes low blood sugar in our favorite mutts.

Although many of us wonder what Buddy would be like buzzed, it is never okay to give alcohol to dogs.

Other foods on the no-no list include, raw yeast, bread dough, macadamia nuts, and avocados.

Why Eat Canned Cranberries When You Could Enjoy The-Best-Ever Cranberry Chutney This Thanksgiving?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 by Margaret

cranberryEvery year, I look forward to Thanksgiving. Everyone has their favorite flavor of the holiday. For some, it’s the mashed potatoes. For others, it’s the pumpkin pie. For still others, it’s the green been casserole.

For me, it’s the cranberry chutney. Our friends, Nick and Heather, shared this recipe and it’s become my fave! Consider giving it a whirl this holiday season:

Soon-To-Be-Famous Cranberry Chutney

2 c Whole cranberries
1 1/3 c Sugar (not so healthy, but needed else the cran will tart you to death. Turkey can’t save you!)
1/2 c Dried chopped figs
1/2 c Dried cherries, strawberries, cranberries and/or blueberries
5 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp Water
1/2 c Dried cherries
2 tbsp Chopped red onion
1 tbsp White rum (apple juice can be substituted.)
1/2 tsp Curry powder
1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp Fresh grated ginger root

Directions:
Bring all ingredients to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium and cook 18 minutes or until thickened.
Let cool before serving.
Chutney can also be used as garnish on cream cheese dolloped crackers or as condiment on leftover turkey sandwiches.

Yum. Yum.

What’s YOUR favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal?
