Remarkable Story of the Winner of the Waterproof Bible

We like to give things away every few weeks. Last winter, we gave away a Waterproof Bible. After the winner was selected, the Bible was popped in the mail. We assumed it arrived. We had no idea the wild adventure God’s Word was on! Here’s Jesse’s remarkable story:

Back in mid december, author and speaker Margaret Feinberg had a contest on her website (www.margaretfeinberg.com). The contest entailed that she would give away a waterproof bible to whomever left the best comment as to “what you would do if you had a waterproof bible.” I scrolled down through some of the comments, finding that all the people who were participating in the contest were leaving very serious and well thought out comments regarding how they would use a waterproof bible for the glory of God. Some of the comments were downright sappy (but with the best of intentions, I’m sure). I thought about it for a minute, and figured that I would do the opposite. Instead of leaving a comment pleading to Margaret as to why I desperately needed a waterproof bible, I decided to leave a comment that was short, sweet, and to the point. It went as follows:

Margaret,

I would evangelize to fish.

Your’s truly,

Jesse.

I’m not going to lie, after posting the comment I pretty much forgot all about it, but some time later I got an email from one of Margaret’s assistants. The email told me that I was the proud winner of the Waterproof Bible giveaway… just in time for Christmas! I replied, thanking them and left my address for them to mail the prize. That was it. I didn’t hear back from them, nor did the waterproof bible ever arrive. One week went by, then two, then three. January came and then went. Then, in early February, we had a few days of warm weather, forcing the accumulated snow and ice to melt away. It was on one of these warm days that while walking up our front steps I saw a tattered package sitting on our front steps. It was soaking wet, torn, and literally falling apart. Low and behold, within the envelope contained my prize… the waterproof bible, literally dripping with the remnants of a New England winter storm. I brought it inside, let it dry out on the table, and it was as good as new. I guess they really don’t mess around when it comes to the durability of those NIV waterproof bibles.

We’ll never really know what exactly happened between the time the waterproof bible got mailed, and to the time it arrived. Somehow it ended up in the middle of a snowbank. When the snow melted from those warm days in February, one of my neighbors noticed it sticking out of the snowbank down the street, pulled it out, read the address, and left it on our front step. There’s a lot of irony in how the waterproof bible found its way to my house, and in the end, it was fitting. I’m just thankful that I didn’t win a contest for a fireproof bible, God only knows what might of happened.

  1. What a great story! So very appropriate! I have a waterproof Bible that I read in the bathtub.

What a fun post! My wife and I had a good smile/laugh while reading.

There has to be SOME marketing angle in there for Jesse.

Someone tell Bardin & Marsee Publishing! (BTW, I absolutely had to look that up!)

  3. Jesse. says:

I agree with Jared… that dude should totally get some sort of marketing angle in there ;)
